Play to Your Handicap, Invest Like the Masters

At the Masters Tournament, even the world’s best golfers operate within conditions they can’t control. Weather shifts without warning. Course conditions evolve throughout the day. The performance of other players changes the competitive landscape in real time. But experienced players don’t approach a course expecting perfect conditions. They do, however, know what’s possible.
Every shot at Augusta is played with a clear understanding of distance, conditions, and margin for error. Players are not guessing. They are operating within a defined range.
Investing presents a similar dynamic. Markets are shaped by variables no investor can predict or influence: economic data, geopolitical developments, interest rate shifts, and investor sentiment. Like sudden wind on a critical shot, these forces can alter outcomes quickly. Yet many portfolios are still constructed with a focus on return potential, without clearly defining the range of possible outcomes.
A more resilient approach starts with a different premise: you cannot control the market, but you can control your exposure to it.
Structured Outcome ETFs offer a framework built on that idea. Rather than attempting to forecast market direction, these strategies establish a clearer range from the outset. A defined downside buffer seeks to help limit losses, while uncapped upside participation allows investors to potentially capture a portion of market gains without imposing a hard cap. In this way, the structure seeks to balance protection with meaningful growth potential.
That balance matters. At Augusta, players are not trying to eliminate risk entirely. Overly conservative play can limit the opportunity to compete. The best outcomes come from strategies that manage risk effectively while still allowing for strong scoring opportunities. Similarly, investors may benefit from an approach that protects against losses but doesn’t unnecessarily limit gains.
The goal is greater range visibility. Investors understand how much downside they are buffered against and how much of the market’s upside they can participate in, before they invest.
Ultimately, successful investing is not about predicting what markets will do next. It’s about knowing your range, staying within it, and positioning for outcomes that align with your goals.
