Weekly Update on AI

OpenAI released an update to GPT-5.6.

OpenAI released a reliability update to GPT-5.6, improving accuracy and expanding access to its more capable models. On internal financial, medical, and legal prompts, responses containing at least one factual error fell by approximately 62% with GPT-5.6 Luna and 68% with GPT-5.6 Sol compared with the previous GPT-5.5. Luna is now the default model for free users with unlimited chats. With ~1 billion weekly ChatGPT users, the frontier advanced in both trustworthiness and reach—two attributes enterprises say are essential before adopting AI at scale.

Google is shifting its AI strategy from frontier models toward infrastructure and chip sales.

On Aug. 5, DeepMind co-founder Demis Hassabis stepped back from day-to-day operations, while Jeff Dean, who launched Google’s custom AI-chip (TPU) program, departed with several top engineers to start a new lab. SemiAnalysis argues that DeepMind has fallen behind in the frontier-model race, with Gemini now ranking around 8th–9th. At the same time, Google Cloud grew 82%, increasingly driven by sales of complete TPU systems to competitors; more than 20% of shipments through 2027 are reportedly destined for Anthropic. The strategic shift positions Google more as AI’s infrastructure provider than its frontier-model leader—potentially boosting near-term cloud revenue while ceding some of the model race to OpenAI and Anthropic.

Schrödinger is gaining traction as pharma adopts agentic AI for drug discovery.

The company beat Q2 expectations, reporting EPS of $0.08 versus the $0.47 loss expected, $58.9 million in revenue, and a 27% increase in annual contract value, while also raising its drug-discovery guidance. More importantly, Schrödinger announced a deal to deploy its newly launched Bunsen agentic AI co-scientist across Bristol Myers Squibb’s entire research organization, integrated with its RetroSynth molecule-design engine. The agreement upgrades a longtime software customer into an enterprise-wide AI platform user and provides a strong early signal that major pharmaceutical companies are willing to invest in agentic AI for drug discovery.

AMD is strengthening its position in AI inference with the acquisition of Taalas.

AMD signed a definitive agreement to acquire the startup, which develops specialized AI inference technology designed to address the compute and memory bottlenecks that drive up inference costs. AMD plans to integrate Taalas’ technology and engineering team into its Instinct GPU roadmap. The deal intensifies AMD’s competition with Nvidia in inference—the fastest-growing and increasingly cost-sensitive segment of AI compute—and comes just days after AMD forecast that its data-center revenue could more than double by 2027.
